[nfb-talk] Convention attendees from Wisconsin?

Well, I've been explaining this for about a week already.
The NFB represents me whether I like it or not. So on that basis alone it's
unreasonable to tell me to not join the NFB. But on a more fundamental
level, it would be really bad if the NFB drove out people who don't agree
with it's positions. That would be a good way for it to become a cultish
group of extremists. The worst thing that ever happened in the blind
community, IMO, is when the ACB broke off to do their own thing. In general,
that's not ethical. You have an obligation to try to work within the rules
to change the direction of a group and to understand that you're not always
going to get your way.
People may be saying, "Why don't you take your own advice." I do understand
that I am not always going to get my way. I am willing to accept that and I
can prove it. I am trying to figure out how to join the NFB. I am hoping to
make my opinions known when I do that but, after all, I am trying to become
part of the group. I'm not trying to destroy the NFB or even trying to
support the opposition.
To be honest, I may also join the ACB. I don't know yet. But I can prove
that I've been urging them to work with the NFB and not against it. I'm sure
their email lists are archived and I can show you messages I posted to their
version of this list where I those urge their president to work with the NFB
on the voting rights legislation.
[Note: The ACB was sponsoring legislation nearly identical to that which the
NFB produced last week. They feel that the NFB pulled the rug out from under
them. I argued that that doesn't matter and that the ACB's first concern is
what's best for blind people. Sound familiar?]
