Announcing BeaconSysInc. A new company producing accessible applications
using Smart Phones with Screen Readers as their operating platform.
A group of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, with the guidance
of
a totally blind member of the team, has spun off a company to develop
innovative applications for smart phones. Several applications will have
uses in both the blind and sighted community, but all applications will be
100% accessible to the blind or visually impaired.
The first application to be released will be a simple currency
identifier.
Snap a picture of a bill and the phone will tell you the denomination of
the
bill. The application is still in beta but is being demonstrated at CSUN
and will be ready for market by mid third quarter 2008. No pricing is
currently set, but it is expected to sell in the low tens of dollars.
Other applications on the horizon include a barcode scanner for the phone
that will identify any nationally registered barcode. and, a
transportation
system that will give buss scheduling and location information. These
products are still in development and are expected to beta toward the end
of
2008.
