[nfb-talk] common-sense issue

Well, you can always dress up like a blind person and make it look like
you're not really blind -- if you have a dog, you have protection, and if no
dog, you are carrying a big stick...
(Sorry, couldn't resist...)
Happy Halloween all!
Oh, and beware of unscrupulous goblins who will rob you if you aren't
careful. I had that happen to me back in college -- I was home alone and
some goblins came to the door. I grabbed the candy and started throwing it
in bags. I made the mistake of telling the kids I was blind. There were at
least 3 or 4 children I guessed, but after throwing candy in 10 or 11 bags I
got suspicious that someone was playing a trick on me. Finally a little
child in the back said "WHEN AM I GETTING SOME???" which told me there were
2 or 3 children in front hogging the door and repeatedly sticking their bags
in front of my face. There were only a handful of bars left in the bag so I
threw the bag in the direction of the little child in the back and closed
the door. Of course, I had no more candy for the subsequent goblins.
Just a warning. It was one of the very few times I have felt really taken
advantage of because of my blindness.
Cheers!

I wanted to discuss with you something that coincides with Halloween:
safety.
Because most of us are blind, we may be vulnerable to attacks by others.
What i want to do is give you a few commonsense pointers:
It's better to be safe, than sorry. Wearing clothing that is see-through
may work.
If it's not safe for you to go out on Halloween Night, don't.
Promote yourself positively. _You _do _not have to be one that wears a
scary costume, just be conservative about your appearance; dress to
impress.
I hope this helps all of you.
Eric
