I have and still do take both.
I'd like to say that I've had a lot of similar experience to what
Jennifer has described. Another issue is that I've had really long
rides on paratransit as well. That, of course, is going to be more the
case when I travel longer distances where its more likely that other
passengers will be picked up and/or dropped off before I get to where
I'm going.
For the sake of reliability and ease of use, regular fixed route transit
is just plain better in and around Portland Oregon where access to where
I'm going is pretty close to a bus or light rail line. There are times
I'll still use paratransit, but I use it a lot less often now than I
used to.

Eric,
I can't tell you about the regular transit system because I've never
used
it, however, I can tell you about Para Transit.
In my state of Rhode Island, it isn't very reliable, although from what
I've
heard from others, it's better here than in most states. I think it all
depends on where you're going.
If I want to go somewhere in my city, it is usually early; Of course,
this
means I get there early and have to sit there for a long time. Sometimes
I
have to wait a long time to get picked up to go home as well.
If I'm going somewhere else, Most of the time it's early, but on
accasion
it's late...once I was taken to the wrong address. I told the driver
that it
was the wrong address, but he didn't listen to me; his attitude seemed
to be
that I didn't know what Was talking about because I am blind. Anyway, by
the
time I arrived at the right address, it was too late and I had to be
taken
home.
Just some thoughts on my experience with Para transit.
Jen
