I am in my 30s and I agree with your statement that computers have
depersonalized human contact. I got in to the federation when I was 19. I
joined because I received a student slate in the mail advertising if you
will the Washington Seminar and I went. I always knew that I could be a
"better blind person," but I had no idea how true that was until I came to
DC. Then I realized that all the hooey my family had been feeding me about
staying in my parents house for what seemed like ever and going to college
but possibly never getting a job was false! I bounced around a bit and like
a lot of young folks at first I did not want to attend the general sessions.
I went to convention to have fun, drink and meet guys, I did not go for
seminars. My how things have changed. In my case years went on and year
after year I went to more sessions and drank less and finally found the
"right guy." But little by little the philosophy came to me. Every little
bit helps and even though young folks may not be ready to sit in an all day
"boring" affair, the little they will pay attention to will increase over
time and they will get it just in time for them to become awesome leaders.
In my state we concentrate on the youth a lot. We have a couple of awesome
programs and let me tell you, some of the kids well, students, are pretty
cool. I know that one day they will be our leaders and that hopefully being
around us as an affiliate will help them as they go to college and work and
do whatever they need to do.
