[nfb-talk] Self Defense Classes at Convention

Joel,

In your message, you say, in part, "I for one would prefer to see a syllabus
of this course and the CV of
the trainer before attending a class, especially given the large
suggested class size." I can't help but wonder. Given this, do you posit
that only a "professional" can teach the blind anything? This is, I think,
a fair question. All of the existence of the federation, the mantra from
the "professionall" has essentially been the same; "we know what's best for
you and you can't teach each other anything because you're blind.". IF I am
not much mistaken, this is so even nowadays especially in the field of
teaching cane travel. It is posited by the so-called professionals that it
is not safe for the blind to teach each other cane travel. The best cane
travel instructor I ever had was himself totally blind. He was Paul
Lorencson. He taught me while I was at the Louisiana Center for The Blind
way back in 1987.

Back to the original subject though. Do you honestly believe you can
assert with any degree of confidence that LisaMaria does not know what she
is doing? IF she didn't, how therefore could she charge? A fair question
do you not suppose? Now, it's true, I do not know the lady myself; but, I'd
prefer to suspect she does in fact know her business; unless it is proven
otherwise. It would appear from the first message in this thread that she
has in fact done this before; and with success. I'd say that tends to speak
rather loudly.

Sincerely yours,
The Constantly Barefooted,
Ray

Subject: Re: [nfb-talk] Self Defense Classes at Convention

Hi all,

I have upon occasion worn the big puffy rubber suit for a women's
self-defense class. I have never witnessed a class nor heard of a
well-regarded corriculum which claimed to teach actual self-defense in
one session.

Much can be lectured about in one day about safety and awareness and how
to change habits and procedures to maximize safety and personal
security. I am very concerned about any class which may claim to
present physical technique.

I for one would prefer to see a syllabus of this course and the CV of
the trainer before attending a class, especially given the large
suggested class size.

fwiw,

Joel
