This is good advice, as far as it goes.
There are, however, companies that do have a charge for things like a
background check or training, but such fees are generally minimal. (I
paid all of $30 for working with ACD Direct...great company, but their
call console was *very* Flash-dependent and didn't play well with a
screen reader...my system slowed to a crawl! Too bad, because they
were great folks.) Such expenses aren't out of line for most of this
kind of work, since you're classified as an independent contractor and
not an employee, in most cases. This means you'll have certain
expenses and must also track your own tax withholdings.
Also, don't confuse "paying for a job" with "paying costs for a
business". That's essentially what you're doing as an independent
contractor.
