[nfb-talk] Mac computers and Voice-Over

While it would be nice for the Apple store employees to know all the
ins and outs of the OS, it's at least a bit unrealistic to expect this
level of knowledge from fairly low-wage sales workers.

Having said that, there really is quite a lot that is very accessible
on the Mac. There's a lot that isn't, but the stuff that isn't will
undoubtedly shrink over the coming months and years.

But in order to actually get your head around the accessibility
features (like VoiceOver), it's important to pretty much forget what
you know about other screen readers and how they interact with the OS
and start fresh, as if you really don't know anything. Doing this,
once you learn a couple key concepts and a dozen or so commands, you
really can become productive in airly short order, and as you keep
going, of course it gets easier. But if you don't put aside your
preconceived ideas of how things should work and ask the wrong kinds
of questions, you will be frustrated and not get the full benefit from
what's available to you.
