Hello Cheryl,
Be forewarned! The Mariott Marquis has lots of escalators. Unless you just
don't like to ride Escalators or if your dog has a fear of them there are
experienced guide dog users who can show you how to use them safely and
successfully with your dog. I learned how to work a dog on escalators not
from a guide dog school, but from another dog user who lived in Boston at
the time; one Mike Hingson to be exact. Thanks Mike. I have had four dogs
and have worked them successfully on escalators even before the guide dog
schools began teaching escalator use as they now do. We were ahead of the
times back then weren't we Mike?
Now a days most U.S. guide dog schools teach escalator use as a part of this
training. I believe GDF is among that lot. There are also many elevators,
but if you can learn to use the escalator you'll avoid many elevator wars
particularly later in the week.
For starters be sure your dog's nails are clipped prior to leaving to
avoid them being caught in the escalator. I'll be clipping Johnny's before
we leave to prevent this problem. Do you have other chapter members that use
escalators with their dogs? Perhaps one of them could give you a few lessons
in their safe use before you leave.
Most public transit stations have escalators in all of their stations,
and many have elevators, but if you can master elevator and escalator use
the more moble and independent you'll be. See you in Atlanta.
