Ryan,
Nothing was ever solved by less communication. Years ago, there were
useful things in Dialogue, and Carol McCarl was the one person at the
Oregon School for the Blind who actually took me seriously when I said
that I ought to learn Braille. She was the only one.
Of course, she started talking about sleepshades, and I became just a
little less interested. There were other factors at that time which
together resulted in me not learning Braille at that time. She was happy
to teach me, though. I think I was even using the same McDuffy Reader I
would later use at the Colorado Center for the Blind.
I wouldn't exactly associate these things with the ACB. If anything, I
would associate them with the NFB. Now, that said, an independent
publication like Dialogue isn't going to always agree with us. The people
who contribute it may actually disagree or just not understand our point
of view. These things happen.
This us-versus-them mentality is bad for the NFB, as is the assumption
that people agree with us or they agree with them. It's all just more
information, data from which an informed opinion on the issues may be
reached.
Admittedly, it's been a long time since I've seen an issue of Dialogue,
and as I noted elsewhere, that's not likely to change at $42 a year. I
realize that's probably less than what a Braille production costs, but
it's also a whole lot more than an email subscription should.
