[nfb-talk] Mobility training

Hello everyone,
I thought highway travel was supposed to be part of a high-quality O&M
program? My wife Mary used to work in an area that was near a major highway
and had no trouble navigating it. She once had a dud of a mobility
instructor as this one seems to be. If that lady had her way Mary would be
calling paratransit to go to our mailbox just a few buildings from ours. I
believe we have a mobility instructor and an agency with low expectations
for blind people rather than a genuine concern about safe travel near a
major highway.
Luckily for Mary this time around she was blessed to receive travel
instruction from a Louisiana Tech O&M Program graduate with National
Orientation and Mobility Certification. This individual who also has a blind
sister believes that blind people can handle a wide variety of travel
situations independently. I would urge this person to request travel
training from an NOMC-Certified instructor with high expectations for
his/her students when it comes to independent travel.

Is she old enough to move on her own, and get into an area where it wouldn't
be that close to the highway?

Dear Rj thay said that could not teach me because we live to close to the
highway.
My mobility teacher told me thay could not teach me unless it was in
school.
This girl wants to better herself. she is 24, and all she did was ask for
mobility training. What advice should I give my friend? Can a mobility
teacher denine some one training if they live to close to the highway?
Thanks RJ
