I think Mike and Joe were just being ornery with each other.
Personally, I think I would not want to be part of an organization where
questioning the status quo was not only acceptable, but encouraged. It's
the same reason why I want people to ask even the most obvious stupid
question about my vision that I've heard ten million times before. Asking
leads to discussion, education, and informed opinions, sometimes different
from those had at the beginning of the discussion.
Sometimes it is my opinion that is informed by others. Sometimes it is
others' opinions informed by me. This process does not happen if we just
stand around agreeing about everything. That is only useful if you want a
bunch of uninformed opinions. I haven't found those terribly useful.
