Lots of practice, yes, along with timed trials.  Someone who has grown up
using the slate is likely to be as fast with it as anyone crunching away
on a Perkins!

The rest of us just work to be as fast as we need to be.  You never know,
as Bennett Prowse described once, when you'll need to depend on your slate
skills because they might well be all you've got.  He had two redundant
bits of technology fail on him at once far away from his office.  When you
absolutely have to have a writing utensil NOW (and happen to be blind),
the slate is it.  You can poke holes in a few sheets of magazine paper if
you have to.
