Dear Joe and all,
A person is legally blind if the vision in their best eye is no better than
20/200, with correction, or the field of vision is restricted to no more
than 20 degrees.
Most state blind services also require a "two eye" pathology to step in and
help.
If only one eye is effected, they need to seek help from Voc Rehab services
under the Department of Labor.
Many state blind services will provide medical coverage, for eye sight
restoration, if there is an expectation of Blindness with in 5 years.
Your friend will need documentation to show them that they are at least
legally blind to get services from a state Blind services department.
If they do not have the money for it, approach the local Lion's Clubs to
cover an eye exam.
I am a Lion and know that they can do this.
If they are still having trouble getting the state blind services to pay
attention to them they should call their local state legislative
representative and raise holy hell and then go to the media.
Some local NFB Chapter should be able to help them get in the door.
This is why it is so important to know how to advocate for yourself.
