BlindSight Scores Well in London
Next Stop: U.S. Premiere at AFI Film Festival on November 6-7
Erik Wins a FREDDIE on November 3 in New York
Erik talks with a young student from the Braille Without Borders School in Lhasa, Tibet
BlindSight Comes to Los Angeles for U.S. Premiere -- November 6 and 7
The heartwarming story of six blind Tibetan teenagers who climbed to 21,000' on the northside of Everest.is captured in the documentary BlindSight, which played to standing ovations at the Toronto Film Festival in September and at the London festival last week. Festival organizers in London could not recall such previous enthusiasm . Time Out, often a tough critic, called BlindSight "brilliant."
Sabriye Tenberken, a blind German educator and adventurer, established a school for the blind in Lhasa, Tibet. She rode horseback into the remote mountainous villages and found young blind children unable to walk, and deprived of schooling and a future, stemming from the cultural belief that they are possessed by evil spirits. She brought them to her school, taught them languages, Braille, computers, and a profession. They followed Erik intently on the internet as he made his historic climb of Everest. When Erik was invited to visit the school, he instead asked Sabriye if she would pick her six most motivated students and then he would train them for a major climb. Soon, Erik and six members of his Everest team were in Tibet teaching the students mountaineering skills. Later that Fall, on a tough month-long expedition through cold and ice, all six reached the Rombuk Glacier in the shadows of Everest. Once cursed and ridiculed, these young people are now returning to their villages as productive heroes. See www.climbingblind.org.
If you are in the Los Angeles area, please join Erik and many members of the climbing and film production teams at its U.S. premiere, at the Arclight Theater on 6360 West Sunset Blvd.. Screenings are at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, November 6 and 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7. Tickets are available on www.AFIFest.com and at 866/AFI-Fest. .
Erik Wins a "FREDDIE"
The FREDDIES, commonly known as the "Oscars in Health & Medicine," will be presented at the 32nd annual International Health & Medical Awards Dinner at Cipriano's in New York on Friday, November 3. Past FREDDIE winners include Christopher Reeve, Jonas Salk, Mohammad Ali, Michael DeBakey, Mary Tyler Moore, Magic Johnson, and Bill and Melinda Gates, to name just a few. Also receiving major awards this evening will be Jerry Lewis, Boomer Esiason, and Dr. Phil. FREDDIE winners "represent the best of the best in worldwide health education." This Black Tie ceremony will be edited for TV, and we will advise when it will air.
Other Happenings
* Do you know of a high school student - blind or sighted - who might be interested in the adventure of a lifetime. You may recall Erik's 2006 Inca Trail expedition when he led 9 blind and 9 sighted teenagers into Machu Picchu, an experience which was featured on World News Tonight and on Nightline. Leading the Way 2007 is A Blind and Sighted Journey with Erik Weihenmayer to the Peruvian Andes. The expedition is being organized again by Global Explorers; and applications are due by November 15. There are currently 6 sighted and 4 blind applicants under consideration. Go to www.globalexplorers.org and click under "Disabled Student Programs." You can also contact Global Explorers directly at 888/359-3801.
* We were advised by an officer of the Women's Correctional Facility in Denver that she had shown the A&E movie on Erik's life to female and male offenders. "Extra Credit" essays were written in response to the movie. We want to share several with you:
- "Though I could not relate to his loss of eyesight, I was able to relate to the will to succeed that Erik possesses."
- "We should never use the word can't."
- "Erik took vision to a different level than seeing. He has actually 'seen' things that we could never imagine."
