[nfb-talk] Youth Empowerment

You'd have to talk to Barbara Cheadle about that.

Frankly, I think we're doing many of those things at the national level. And
I think we shouldn't delude ourselves by imagining that there's a "quick
fix" for the problem of youth empowerment. I think the long-term answer is
friendship. But we first have to find the people with whom to make friends,
that is, the young people, and then we must find a way to get them involved
and listening to us for more than a sound-byte. And I think some of the
responsibility for getting young people involved devolves upon the young
people who are already in our movement. Many afiliates have no problem with
this; Texas is, I think, a good example. But other affiliates -- even if
some young people are involved -- suffer from the problem that the young
people have their own lives and activities to deal with and don't see
Federation-building as sufficiently important to make sacrifices. In fact,
I'm not sure sacrifice is in the vocabulary of anyone under forty except,
perhaps, for those in the military. I mean no disparagement by saying this.
It's just a different day and age.

Hi, Tina,

I think you're right that we need more opportunities for our youth, and a
good brainstorm would be great. Can it become part of the NOPBC agenda?
