[nfb-talk] paper money -- did anyone hear about this?

Allen:

If you follow your reasoning, you'll ultimately conclude that the only way
to solve our problems is for us to be sighted. We will always need help;
we're arguing, as a practical matter, over what we are willing to accept
help on and at what price.

Take a look at the NFB Resolutions for, I think, 2003 and you'll find one on
this matter. Frankly, I don't *want* differently-sized bills; I can see
plenty of potential for mischief. And tactile markings won't survive much
handling. Bills have to be replaced once every six months or so on average;
that ought to tell you something about survivability of tactile features.

And where does it end? Do we demand braille embossers on all
receipt-printing equipment? At some time, we're going to have to adapt to
the world as it is.

Okay, I can understand that viewpoint, but you all have to admit it...we've
all been through that familiar scnario of having to ask a cashier "Um, which
bills are which?"
 More often than not, people are willing to help, but there are enough cases
of people acting as if by asking you're imposijng on their world that, quite
honestly, I would rather have money in different sizes according to
denomination so I don't have to ask...I know. It's just one more way of
thinking independently, and one less way of having to ask for help in
certain situations.

Just my two cents...right or wrong.

The thing is, there is technology --and has been for years -- for
recognizing paper money. I have a note teller. Given it is a little pricy,
that probably excludes some persons, but shouldn't be a problem as a
business expense if a person works with money on the job. All we need is
another misconception about blindness that would make employers hesitant to
hire someone with a visual impairment. It's kind of like saying color is
unfair to blind people. Well, it is true things are color coded so persons
without color vision are at a disadvantage, but if we start nixing
everything in the environment as being exclusionary we will alienate the
world.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

There was something on the acb list but I didn't think about what it was
saying.
We sure don't need more coins.
They are heavy enough.
