When I first lost my sight, I attended ACB chapter meetings, as there were
no NFB chapters in the city where I was living. At the meetings, they
talked about public awareness a little bit, but the rest of the time was
spent complaining and trashing the NFB. I didn't know anything about the
NFB except what I had heard from the people in that chapter. I didn't want
to have anything to do with the NFB because of the things I heard. Still, I
couldn't stand all the pathetic people whining and complaining at the ACB
meetings, so I stopped going after about a year. I had just lost my sight
and needed positive not negative people in my life.
Then years later in 1996, I applied for an NFB scholarship. I figured I
could take the money and run, as I knew I didn't want to hang around these
radical NFB people, or I thought I didn't because of the things I had heard
from the other side. Well, I found positive people who were doing things
with their lives and making changes to better the lives of blind people. I
felt an energy that was not present in the ACB. For me, I felt as though I
finally had my life back, as being around NFB members taught me independence
and confidence.
So I have been leading and/or going to NFB chapter meetings and conventions
since 1996. And how much time is spent at those meetings trashing the ACB?
None. Instead, we focus on ways to better the lives for all blind people.
We discuss important issues and blind people in our communities who need
help and try to figure out ways to help them. The only time the ACB is
mentioned is when they are trying to stop something positive we are trying
to do, like providing newspapers for all blind people with Newsline.
If there are any ACB people on here who have never been involved with the
NFB and have only heard things from ACB members, I suggest you explore both
options before you decide to stay with a group of whiners and complainers.
If you like to whine and complain about your situation and feel as though
you can't do anything in your life because you are blind, then stay with the
ACB because that's where you belong. On the other hand, if you believe that
blind people should be treated as equals in this society and if you truly
want to make a positive difference in the lives of the blind now and of the
future, you should join the NFB.
