Subject: [nfb-talk] ONe last word on the cash debate
Ok all here is my final comment on all of this. You may chose to agree
or diagree but their are certain facts in all of this. First of all
quite frankly everyone has a right to an opinion but we all need to
listen with open minds to others views and then make our own choices on
how we will stand in our beliefs. We all come from different backgrounds
and different life experiences and will mot likely see certain priorites
over others but that does not mean one person is right or wrong.
On the issue of resolution verses law the bottom line is not he 1997
resolution was not a law nor anything like the lawsuit filed by ACB
except it does state no matter how you slice it the NFB was at that time
in favor of accessable currency. The wording is different and most
likely less offensive to some but the intent was the same. If you do not
like the way the law suite was worded then that is fine but I do not
think ACB ever intended to give the impression that blind people were
incapable of handling money now they are also simply saying that
accessable money would make us more independant. The wording is more the
issue than the basic principle from what I see. Unless NFB has suddenly
turned a complete about face in which case it makes me wonder more about
NFB credability. It is the same as the people on thie list who have said
ACB does not stand behind its convictions or get things done. If NFB
completely does a 180 that makes NFB look the same way.
On the issue of not wanting accessable currency just for the blind fine.
It would be a benefit for far more people if you change size and color.
Children, People with developemental disabilities, those immegrating from
other countries, seniors. It is much easier to teach a denomination to
someone having cognitive difficulties using size and color. So you see
it would not benefit just the blind.
On the issue of folding money yes it is a tried and true method but at
some point you will have to ask someone somewhere what a bill is and
would it not be nicer just to know on your own. Further as one friend
pointed out the only way to do it completely independantly is to find an
ATM that gives $5 bills and never use anything larger than a $5 that way
all your change will come in $1 bills. Or you can carry $1 bills but
that would make a very bulky wallet.
Now on to the Bush administrations response that is certainly
discrimination in the highest form. Saying that the blind can use credit
cards and debit cards in place of cash is as condescending and slanderous
as you can get. Why should we have to chosse between accessable cash and
using cards. Further since most blind people are not working and still
on government assistence they cannot get a credit card. No card company
will issue a card to somone whos sole income is government checks.
Further using a card unless you pay it off monthly is costly with
finance charges. Lets face it blind people are just like everyone else
and many of us may or may not be able handle credit if we can get it.
The bottom line is they did not think when they made such a statement
because any smart official would have never said this one.
On the vending issue I am sorry but they change these machines constantly
now because of the new bill designs to prevent counterfitting. That
costs them money and yet they say even a group of teenage boys was able
to download pictures of the current $20 bills get the appropriate paper
and print them out and pass off several so those efforts sure are not
working. If they can waste money like they have been there is plenty to
spare. Secondly they are coming out with collectable $1 coins now like
the collectable quarters in hope they will cirulate because the gold $1
coins did not. CMON cry poor. Secondly the vending industry makes
plenty of money and the slots sizes would not have to change on machines
as the machines read the bills not the size. They just are afraid they
might have to pay more to modify something but they can afford it.
Yes I do admit there are other issues that are also important like
employment and accessable appliances but the reality is everyone picks
what is important to them and you cannot tell anyone else what to believe
is most important. Accessable currency is not going to hurt us it may
open up doors of oppertunity. Frankly the public will think what they
want to think and those who are ignorant of the facts may think it makes
us look helpless but believe me those same people will think that no
matter what. You cannot change ignorant people and there are far more
people out there who believe we can succeed.
On the issue of ACB I have seen some false statements on here about the
organization just as I have seen on the ACB list about NFB but a lot is
based on either what others have told people and they believe wihout
first hand knowledge or on a bad experience in either group. I have seen
people say ACB is all partyers yet I have seen far less partying at ACB
conventions than I did at NFB conventions. ACB has little mixers but not
the big boose outs we once had in NFB. Now I am not saying that for
those one or two people they may have fallen into the crowd of partyers
but over all I have not seen as much. Still it is about who you spend
your time with more than the organization itself. I tend to find ACB
conventions rather boring in the partying department anyway. Contrary to
popular belief ACB does not believe their should be an APS signal at
every corner only at those where it would be most helpful. ACB has never
said they should be everywhere and never would. Basically the same thing
that NFB would say. On the same note I have seen on ACB lists posts
about NFB being a cult and how mistreated people felt or about being
kicked out of NFB because of something they did or said. Well I had
some bad experiences with NFB in that department but I cannot wholey
blame NFB as it is not the organization but the people wihin it whom
choose to be closed minded. Not all NFB members believe that a person
cannot speak against the organization position as I can attest to as many
of you have engaged in open discussion with me. A few people however
made a choice to turn it into a personal assault but this was not NFB
attacking me but some misguided members who may have believed they were
touting the party line but somehow crossed another one. I believe in my
heart of hearts if we all could dialogue like I have with many of you on
this list we would find we are not so far apart.
