[nfb-talk] Open Letter to Marc Maurer

History does not give Marc Maurer and the NFB the right to discredit another
organization as it did the ACB in the Press Release.
The NFB has every right to express its dissenting opinion, but it does not
have the right to make defamatory comments about the ACB in an official
press release. I encourage all NFB members who agree with this sentiment to
express your disapproval to Marc Maurer.

Robyn,
Read the history of the NFB and you'll understand just why it is the NFB and
ACB will never really "get along" like you wish they would. There's way too
much bad blood.

The ACB does not view blindness as a tragedy or anything more than what it
is. The ACB does believe in accomodations that make life easier for the
blind. They believe in the same good training but also that people are
different and not everyone fits the same mold. Some people with all the
training in the world need more help than others. This is not a cookie
cutter world we live in. ACB does not believe that blindness needs to be
pitied but too pushes for employment and independance.
However the ACB does not deny accomodations that might help make life a
little easier.

Lets face it with all the training in the world no blind person can read
todays paper currency. It does not matter that you fold money a certain way
or put it in a certain place or that you might limit yourself to small
bills. No matter how you slice it at first you must depend on someone to
tell you what that bill is. The teller at the bank might tell you it is a
$10 but you would not know otherwise. From that point on the alternative
techniques work. Once you know what your bills are you can fold them in
certain ways. Yes there are money identifiers but a majority of folks
cannot afford them.

It is wrong to say that ACB portrays blind people as victims because it
advocates for acccomodations. At no time does ACB say these accomodations
shoudl replace proper training in alternative techniques.

The ACB does not believe the blind need constant help from the sighted but
this is what many in the NFB have been told or falsly believe. ACB does not
want the blind dependant on the sighted any more than the NFB does. It
truly aggrevates me that these misconceptions are spread so wildly. My
biggest beef is not with NFB or ACB but with people who tell me how I should
think. What irritates me more in any organization are the people who talk a
good game but in real life do things vastly different from what they
promote. There have been people in NFB who promote independance yet depend
on sighted spouses and the same happens in ACB.

I would like all the name calling and false rumors to stop and us all to
work together for the commmon cause. Reality is that sooner or later
neither NFB nor ACB will have the power but the senior community will and
believe me those who are aging and facing health issues along with blindness
will want accessable currency, audible signals, and many other things we
seem to fight over and the senior community will have they final say as it
is vastly larger than either group.

Robyn
