I had circulated the posting about the terrible episode of Monk to several
friends who are into media, and one replied as below. I rarely use my TV,
except when I get a DVS video from my talking bok library. The only show I
watch regularly is Nova with DVS on PBS.
Anyhow, I was wondering whether Monk's blindness was a temporary condition
confined to that one show or an ark of a few shows, or whether it is now a
permanent part of the show. If so, is he learning to do better at living
with blindness?
Best, Ed Meskys

Dear Ed, I used to watch Monk, although I haven't been watching the current
season and didn't see that ridiculous blindness edisode that you e-mailed me
about. It's interesting, because the character of Monk already suffers from
the problem of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The central driving force of
the series is Monk's struggle to overcome that very serious problem so that
he can to continue to do important work as an investigator of crimes. It
seems excessive to also make him blind, even if they had handled the subject
more intelligently. The series seems to have degenerated into self-parody.
That's too bad, because it used to be quite good. I always felt that it
reflected real knowledge of, and sympathy toward the problems of
obsessive-compulsive people. Apparently, they do not have similar success
in dealing with the topic of blindness. Television is a very unreliable
medium anyway, we can't expect too much from it. It has always tended
toward garbage. Yours, David Palter
