Hello, This is John Miller. I am serving on the Research and
Development Committee of the National Federation of the Blind.

I invite you to help me collect science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics material for the STEM literature project.

The materials will be used to score the inftyproject.org Infinity Reader
software. This program creates optical character recognition

files in latex format from typeset mathematics.

I wish to collect a sample of 5 to 10 pages from a high school,

undergraduate, or graduate program textbook from some of the STEM
fields. I have found that the IR OCR works best with the original text

after it has been removed from its binding.

The project is to donate a textbook or technical article containing

technical information. Select a book that you use within your field in
your studies or in your professional work.

Meet with a reader and provide a list of pages from the text that you
find are representative of your field.

If you have access to a scanner and wish to participate in the project
by providing scanned files,

create 600 DPI black and white tiff files from the material after taking
the text out of its binding.

e-mail the resulting tiff file to me.

Be sure and include the title, author, publisher, and edition of the
text along with a list of the selected pages.

If you wish to participate but do not have access to a scanner,

please mail the title page along with selected pages of the original
text to me. I will scan the material and use the material with the IR
OCR program to see how the OCR performs with it.

Please use the following address: John Miller, 10955 Deering Street, San
Diego, CA 92126.

I will prepare the material for transcription into the Nemeth Braille
Code.

Please note that IR only recognizes images that are right-side up. It
also does not decolumnize multiple column printed material.

The goal of the project is to give the organized blind an understanding
of what quality and what notations IR

provides reliably.

The results of the STEM literature project will be shared with this list
and the designers of IR.

Representative math structures located in the STEM literature will also
be provided to Duxbury Systems

in order to improve its technical braille translation.

If you are a Nemeth braille transcriber or are familiar with the Nemeth
braille code and also would like to examine braille material for
correctness, I would appreciate your help.

If you wish to participate in the project, please contact me.

Best regards,

John Miller
