[Nfb-science] A code to get all braille codes

Michael,

liblouis has special facilities for handling math. To get different
braille math codes you would simply write different translation tables.
No programming code would have to be duplicated. There is already a
table for Nemeth in the sister library liblouisxml, which can also be
downloaded from http:/www.jjb-software.com . The math facilities are
also discussed in the documentation. Perhaps the most useful is the
ability to make a second pass over a translation to put in nitpicking
corrections, such as handling of numeric subscripts in Nemeth. This is
all done automatically. I have used this approach in a commercial
package and it works well.

There is a European project that tried to create a master braille code,
but I don't think it is very practical.

This thought was inspired by someone asking me for advice about producing a braille copy of a maths book, and I said that they would need to consider who would be reading it as there are different codes used in different countries, and each code would be a different translation. Now that is where that opening question comes in, if there was a master code, that documents could be translated into, and then any human correction/work could be done on that, and then any code could be easily run off from that (e.g. by substitution) (I.E. if that first translation is correct, all braille copies regardless of braille code will be correct).

Originally I was thinking to just write another renderer for each code, but that would require duplicating code that is nothing to do with the braille code (e.g. the formatting code). That is where my thought about this master braille code comes in, I could have a common renderer which puts it into this master code, and then code specific substitution would be run on that, after any hand corrections.
