My employer, the California Department of Water Resources, has recently completed a virtual tour of one of its facilities that is a part of our State Water Project. This facility is at Oroville Dam (which is, incidentally, the tallest earthfill dam in the nation): it is the fish hatchery. This virtual tour will soon be available online, and the developer has worked on an innovative approach to make it accessible to blind computer users. He's asked for my input--and the input of blind consumers. So let's give him our input!

We'll gather at my office after work at about 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 27. My office is at 901 P Street, just a couple of blocks from the 8th and O light rail station. We'll probably meet for about an hour.

Please plan to come! The adaptation of this virtual tour of the Oroville fish hatchery includes narration, high quality sound recordings of each location, and--most interestingly--the ability to navigate around the facility to every point using cardinal directions and keyboard commands. The ability to navigate independently is something that visitors to the facility can't have because the real tours are guided. The developer is very open to our input. Let's help shape good blindness adaptations to this virtual tour of one of our state's key pieces of infrastructure.

So mark your calendars! If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to reply on this listserve or call me at (530) 219-2573.
