[Nfb-krafters-korner] knitting machines

Truly it is a matter of thinking through everything. My instructor is an
hour and a half away. So in the business plan I have to have money for
travel. I have a driver; thank God, already set up and good to go on
Fridays and Saturdays. Those are her only two days off. I have to pay my
teacher and pay for supplies and the machines themselves. Figure out the
space in my home for the business. Just all kinds of things to think
through. I have to pay for a lot of items out of pocket, such as my table
to assemble my items. I need a drop leaf because of space constraints,
computer desk, odds and ends for sewing, supply the electric, phone internet
connection, insurance. But if I want the state to take care of the big
budget things, I have to show some costs will be picked up by me. The
state pays for a professional to do the business evaluation. She asked me a
series of questions that I had to research and think over. When that was
done, she found the business was a viable one. Then to my shock, grimmus, I
had to write the business plan using their template. The professional
business writer was there to coach. But it is my project and therefore my
responsibility to put all the parts together. Hey I sew so am used to
assembly, lol. Now where I am standing is the VR counselor likes the plan.
The Professional Business writer likes the plan, though she has to do the
three year projection. I claim stupidity on that freaky concept. Now I
need an AT assessment. I am small of stature so need tables that will
adjust. I also need a computer to run my business off of. So that is also
part of the AT assessment. Once that is all together, then it can go to the
Committee who does the final thumbs up or down.

How do you as a blind person use a knitting machine? Well other then the
needle positions needs to be marked, it is pretty accessible. Pretty much
what you do is run a carriage back and forth. Now I don't have a lot of
hand strength so one of my machines will be motorized. I have not threaded a
machine yet so don't know how to do that yet. One of the machines will be
connected to a computer. So can make very custom orders.

I got some great ideas from this list how to keep my yarn colors separated.
Thank you ladies! You are all awesome wonderful folks. The beading I would
like to add to my sweater designs down the road.

Anyway, stay tuned for more.

Becky and my full partner Jake

Becky

We would love to haer more about your experiences and what all is
involved in setting up a business and what you have encountered
as a blind person. I understand that some things are private but
it is always helpful to know what others encounter.

Cindy
