I know nothing about using a gage, but you are always better off to have
to much yarn than not enough.  Save at least one of the labels until
your project is done for matching, if necessary.  Each yarn color has a
code number so the type can be found again.  People, like joyce, can use
left overs on small items like weaving a small bag or maybe booties or
even a hat for a baby.

If you are intending to make a specific pattern with Merino stripe, its
first important to find out how many yards/meters are in 1 skein/ball of
the Merino stripe yarn.  If it is what I am thinking of it is a "Crystal
Palace Inc." yarn and you could look up the information on their web
site.

Once you know the yardage per skein, multiply it by 10 for the total
yards required for your project.  The web site should also give its
weight classification, i.e. Sport, DK, Worsted, bulky, etc.  Then you
can search around for different brands that have a yarn of the same
weight classification.  And, keep in mind while a different yarn may be
the same weight, the yardage per skein often varies.  Make sure you buy
the correct yardage to complete your project.. Do not go by the actual
weight of the skein ie. 1.5 Oz or 3 oz since this doesn't play very much
into the equation.

Okay, here is what I was thinking on this.

I have a pattern that calls for:

10 balls of Merino stripe 50 gram balls
Gauge: 14 sts = 4" (10 cm) in St st.

I am looking on ebay to purchase some cones since I really can't afford
this
yarn plus I am interested in some different color combinations.  What do
I
need to look for when trying to purchase different yarn?  Again,
remember
that I cannot just pick this up and do a test gauge.  Of course, once I
have
purchased the yarn, I will do a test before actually starting the
pattern.
