Thanks for this resource. One question, however. Do you know if this
person will transcribe patterns that contain charts?
This is an issue I think a group like this can address. Over--all I have
been very happy with NLS's response when I submit knitting related books as
suggestions for them to include in the NLS collection. One problem, that I
view as a large problem, isthat they will not touch knitting/crochet books
that contain "charted" patterns. In my mind these can and should be
translated into text just as printed music is done for musicians. The
library does not tell more advanced, blind musicians that they cannot play
a peice by Mozart or Bach because they can't translate the music. Print
music looks nothing likeliterary printand a special system has been
developed to present music to blind people. In the case of knitters, it
does not have to be as complicated as developing a special system to relay
the correct information to the blind.
For charted patterns, all that need be done is get knitters who know how to
read charts and can type them up in the standard line-by-line directions.
Appended the translation at the beginning or end of a pattern and then
through the pattern just refer to the chart justas is done in the print
versions.
With the costs of publishing books and the space that written out directions
take designers & publishers are going more towards charted designs. This
will remove a wealth of information from knitters & crocheters who are blind
and cannot access charted materials. As a blind knitter, I like challenges
and trying new techniques.
