Dear Joyce and other Krafters,
I suggest this first year, try something really different in the
Exhibit Hall (if you get a table) to cut down on the amount of work
required. Advertise WHEN the table will be staffed in the April BRAILLE
MONITOR, plus send an announcement of same to the VOICE OF THE DIABETIC,
and maybe get a paragraph on a Presidential Release (especially the last
one before convention which is produced in June) to announce which times
and which demo or demos will be done all of one day or half-day in the
Hall. The announcements for the April MONITOR concerning convention
must be given to the editor in February. Barbara Pierce works two
months ahead on each issue. And as you know, the VOICE is quarterly, so
in order to make sure something is printed before it's after convention,
maybe it would be best to send a miniature announcement to the editor
that would state the Krafter's will have a meeting and a breakfast at
convention so look for time and place when you get to Dallas.
Some folks on this list will go to Dallas but how many will have time to
run the table? I doubt there are enough folks not tied up in other
convention activities to run the table all the times the hall is open.
Here's an alternate plan: you could ask Mrs. Jernigan whether it would
be alright to run some advertised demos in the early evenings out of
someone's hotel room, which you would want to advertise in BRAILLE
MONITOR's Monitor Miniatures and maybe in an announcement by Dr. Maurer
from the podium. OH, and, positively, Joyce, as you have stated, you
must request a meeting room for the Krafters get-together to discuss
becoming an official group or division. It is not too early to give
that request to Mrs. Jernigan now. You can email it to the general NFB
HQ address if you like. The address is <nfb at nfb.org>. Your note will
get sorted out and given to her.
Of course, an even simpler plan would be to not have a table in
the hall, but have demos at the meeting and advertise this feature to
draw in some of the crowd with too many places to go all at the same
time in the hotel.
One more idea, as well as the evening meeting, advertise a
get-together NFB Krafter's Networking Breakfast at 7 a.m., on one of the
convention mornings, in the hotel coffee shop. You pick which morning.
Some who cannot come to the evening event will be interested to come to
the breakfast. Based on my experience, I'd say do not let the hotel put
more than 6 people at one table though, because more than 6 makes it
very hard to actually talk together during breakfast. It works better to
have as many tables no bigger than six as you have people showing up.
Just a few ideas....

I meant to write that in a new email.
I have to contact National to put in a request for space about the
Crafter's group/division, but I need to check out who will be willing to
pitch in and help at the Convention in Texas.
I have taken this ball and run with it so far on my own. I received
over 50 emails of folks that were interested in a group/division for
Crafters. I had gotten requests to start a list too.
Not all that many signed up for the list or should I say we have
lurkers, but not many talkers here.
I think it would be good to have some demos going on as was suggested
possibly in the place where the divisions had one last year. A table in
the exhibit hall would be good, if we could get enough folks to cover
the times that the exhibit hall is open. We need to talk about
crafting and get people to take an interest to see where to go with
this group/division.
Please email me off list with your thoughts and send me your phone
number so we can make some plans.
I need some help and right now I feel as I am standing alone.
