Go to www.nfb.org then to PRODUCTS AND TECHNOLOGY then PRODUCT CATALOG
then MATHEMATICAL AIDS, then follow the links to get to ABACUS. On the
other hand, I already did that, so here is the URL straight to "abacus"
which, yes, the NFB does still sell.

The NFB might still sell the abacus. They are simple for adding. The
top bead is 5 and the bottom 4 are 1. If none are pushed up, then the
number is zero. I have never made anything that I could not actually
count the rows, like my long ago, afkin squares. Scarves can go on and
on until you think they are long enough.
You could also use a safty pin to count your x amount, like move it up
every ten rows.
Bye for now.

Unfortunately, I neither have an abacus nor learned how to use one.
That does sound like a great way to do it though. Any body have any
other suggestions?
Also, I'll pass along a tip. I learned about using a "lifeline" when
knitting. Simply run a separate piece of thread through the row with a
tapestry needle. Now if you drop a stitch, you will easily be able to
insert your needle along the thread row and then pull the stitches out
above it.
I know I will definitely be using this in my next project because I have
found it really difficult to isolate that dropped stitch when I can't
see it. If this works well, I may even try knitting in the car again.
The first time that was not a pretty picture.
