[Nfb-krafters-korner] A thought about convention

Just a thought to add, folks.
Plenty people come to our annual convention who are not members,
especially those who want to explore the Exhibit Hall of specialized
stuff for sale or for giving away to the blind and VI (like the Bible
groups). Nowhere else in the U.S. will there be so much in one room,
except maybe at the big expensive-to-visit concept shows for the
"disabled," but that is not totally for the same audience. Nonmembers
also come for the meetings of the blind lawyers, blind teachers, blind
other workers or other interests (like guide dogs), and for the
workshops and seminars. (The natives are very friendly even if you're
sighted.)
The visitors I've met have not stayed for the general sessions
(held the last 4 days) and so don't know that they are missing important
speeches that put governmental and agency policies on record (from which
we have documented facts so we can support or work on change) and other
speeches that are just 100 percent interesting--like the two senior
blind gents who built a house, and the woman from England who wrote the
best book on the history of Louis Braille and the Braille code.
Anyone interested in just dropping in on our convention is
welcome. Convention registration at the door is $20 for the whole week,
or $15 if you register online before May 31 (www.nfb.org and look for
the link). (Some people, I've heard, have come and walked around and
into meetings and stuff without paying. Gasp.) Just a thought.
Lorraine
