Dear Terry,
I love to do lots of different things.
I do wood working, metal working, plastic, leather work, wood burning and
Styrofoam and clay .
I have made some of my own tools for working with some of the crafts such as
a Plexiglas bender for bending and folding Plexiglas in to aquariums and
terrariums.
It used a piece of nichrome wire laying in a notch of transite strips and
connected to a switch and electric cord. When it is plugged in and the
switch turned on, the wire gets red hot and heats the Plexiglas in a strip
about an inch wide.
The Plexiglas gets soft and you can bend it.
You can cut and sand the Plexiglas just like you would shape or sand wood.
There are special glues you can get to glue the pieces together. It comes
in many colors and can be used to make many useful items, like napkin
holders, planters, boxes etc, etc, etc.
I have also used a piece of nichrome wire to make a Styrofoam and urethane
foam cutter.
I made a metal frame and insulated the ends so I could fasten the ends of
the wire to them.
The top arm is hinged and loaded with a spring that always keeps the
nichrome wire tight as it expands when it gets red hot.
The wire passes through a piece of wood with a long slot cut in it.
This lets me set different angles between the line of the wire and the
wooden table surface.
This makes cutting angles easier and more precision.
I use it to cut out foam shapes for airplanes and other things I want to
make using foam.
I have used some of the things I have cut out to make cast aluminum parts
by the "lost wax" method where the foam part is placed in a special metal
box called a cope and drag, packed with "green sand" and red hot metal
poured in to the cope and drag.
The hot metal gasifies the foam and the metal takes the place of the foam
part. After it cools, the cope and drag are split apart, the sand removed
and the metal part recovered. The extra metal is cut off and the part is
shined and finished.
I make parts for cars and airplanes in this way as well as parts for other
things.
Well, I have bent your ears enough for now. Talk to you later.
