[Nfb-krafters-korner] Viking wire weaving

It makes a wire chain just like the necklaces one buys. I prefer the
traditional colors. The chain in gold, silver, or bronze "jewelry wire"
can be used for any jewelry chain purpose from earrings to ankle
bracelets, for the neck or wrist or a man's tie holder. I do not think
I can describe the process to make it online, only in person. If you
Google it, you will find some information others have posted on the
Internet.

Hi Lorraine;
Can you describe wire weaving and what you make or use it for.

itsgauge

Wire is measured by its gauge, [g a u g e] which is sometimes
abbreviated as ga [g a]. Funny thing, the bigger the number, the
smaller diameter on the wire. I do wire weaving with 24, 26, or 28 gauge
wire. To use stiffer wire for closures at the end, I use 16 gauge or 20
gauge. You can find all these sizes at craft shops such as JoAnn's, A.
C. Moore, and Michaels, or at bead shops, except I find these shops are
sometimes out of the size I want at the time I go to find my wire, so I
tend to stock up when I spot my gauge at a good price. Most spools of
such wire cost about $3.00 each. Here a rather interesting definition of
the word gauge from the online dictionary, Merriam-Webster.com:

Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English gauge, from Anglo-French
Date: 15th century
1 a: a measurement (as of linear dimension) according to some standard
or system: as (1): the distance between the rails of a railroad (2): the
size of a shotgun barrel's inner diameter nominally expressed as the
number of lead balls each just fitting that diameter required to make a
pound <a 12-gauge shotgun> (3): the thickness of a thin material (as
sheet metal or plastic film) (4): the diameter of a slender object (as
wire or a hypodermic needle) (5): the fineness of a knitted fabric
expressed by the number of loops per unit width b: dimensions, size c:
measure 1 <surveys are a gauge of public sentiment>
2: an instrument for or a means of measuring or testing: as a: an
instrument for measuring a dimension or for testing mechanical accuracy
b: an instrument with a graduated scale or dialect for measuring or
indicating quantity
3: relative position of a ship with reference to another ship and the
wind
4: a function introduced into a field equation to produce a convenient
form of the equation but having no observable physical consequences

If you want to know even more about wire gauges, go to this fine lengthy
and interesting article from Wikipedia which I found by typing "wire
gauge" in the search box:

Happy reading,

Dear Ms. needle Threader,

You might need to contact some wire manufacturers and ask for stainless
steel wire.
AS for the gage size, you will have to ask them as I do not know the
gages that small.
I would get someone to measure the eye opening in a common needle that
you use and look for a wire gage that is small enough to fit threw that
eye easily.
If you still have an old wire threader, you could get someone who can
read a micrometer and have them measure that wire in thousands of an
inch.
There you can tell the diameter of the wire to the wire company for
ordering.
