[Nfb-fundraising] Braille Education, and the NEA's "Big Read" Program

Hello,

This grant opportunity below is for organizations
willing to promote literacy.  as I've said before, I
think we could achieve multiple goals by doing such a
thing in our communities, through braille reading and
participation of we who are blind.  The broad grant opp
says:

"Grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 each are
available to encourage local communities to inspire
literary reading."

If you've got a couple of solid braille readers in your
chapter, you could work together with, let's say a
Barnes & Noble for example, and hold literary readings,
with a blind braile reader doing the reading.

Institute of Museum and Library Services and National
Endowment for the Arts Announce Third Deadline for
the Big Read

Deadline: July 31, 2007

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (
http://www.imls.gov/ ),
 in partnership with the National Endowment for the
Arts
 ( http://www.nea.gov/ ), have announced the third
deadline for
 the Big Read program. The purpose of the program is to
revital-
 ize the role of literature in American popular
culture. Grants
 ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 each are available to
encourage
 local communities to inspire literary reading through
the
 program.

Organizations selected to participate in the Big Read
will
 receive a grant, financial support to attend a
national orien-
 tation meeting, educational and promotional materials
for broad
 distribution, an organizer's guide for developing and
managing
 Big Read activities, inclusion of the organization and
its
 activities on the Big Read Web site, and the prestige
of parti-
 cipating in a highly visible national initiative.
Approximately
 120 organizations of varying sizes across the United
States will
 be selected in this funding cycle. Funded activities
should be
 scheduled to take place between January and June 2008.
