Hello Listers,

Does your local library system do a good job of making
your regular library offerings accessible to you?  For
instance, the Akron Ohio main library, last time I
checked, had far more descriptive videos available to
those eligible, than did the Cleveland TBL.  Sad, but
true.  They also have JFW on their computers, in the
Kids' department even, so computers can be accessed by
screenreader as necessary.  If your local libraries
have such things and more, and have been working with
your chapter to make sure things are accessible, you
might want to share the following grant opportunity
with them.  It could help them get another five-grand
in funding, and that's not a bad way to build
relationships. ;-)

Making their offerings accessible to children (and
others) lets them qualify for this grant.  The criteria
says libraries that are eligible are ones that work
with, "those who need accommodation..."  Details are
below.

Association for Library Service to Children Offers
Underserved
Populations Outreach Grant

Deadline: December 3, 2007

The Association for Library Service to Children
 ( http://www.ala.org/alsc ), a division of the
American Library
 Association ( http://www.ala.org ), and Candlewick
Press
 ( http://www.candlewick.com ) have announced "Light
the Way:
 Outreach to the Underserved," a one-time grant of
$5,000 for a
 library conducting exemplary outreach to underserved
populations.

The ALSC Library Service to Special Population Children
and Their
 Caregivers Committee will select the winner and may
name up to
 three Honorable Mentions. Special population children
may include
 those who have learning or physical differences, speak
English as
 a second language, are in a non-traditional school
environment or
 a non-traditional family setting (such as teen
parents, foster
 children, children in the juvenile justice system, and
children
 in gay and lesbian families), and those who need
accommodation
 service to meet their needs.

Criteria and an application for the grant are available
