FEDERATION OF THE BLIND CELEBRATES SIX YEARS OF MOVEMENT

What do a Polynesian resort, an Irish pub, and a group of blind advocates have in common? On July 15 they all come to celebrate the group's sixth anniversary. The East Hillsborough Chapter is hosting a birthday party at O'Brien's Irish Pub & Bistro, located at 701 W. Lumsden Ave. (corner of King's & Lumsden) from 11:00 until 3:00. The Hawaiian themed party will feature food and drink specials, including a special price on the Blue Hawaiian drink.

            During the party, the Chapter will draw for the winning ticket for "A Polynesian Stay for Labor Day". One person will win a three night stay at the incomparable Polynesian Resort for Labor Day weekend. In addition to a room with an impressive Magic Kingdom view, the winner will also receive two two-day "Park-Hopper" passes, to enjoy all that Disney has to offer. If this were not enough, all meals are included. The prize package is valued at nearly $2200! Only 1000 chances are available. Tickets are $10 each while they last. The winner will be notified during this party and the telephone call broadcast over the public address system at the party.

            "I am proud of the accomplishments of our chapter," says President Marion Gwizdala, "We've had a positive effect on the lives of blind people locally, around the State, and across the nation. What we have done in Florida is being noticed!"

            The East Hillsborough Chapter was organized in July of 2000 and quickly became a very active, dynamic Chapter, winning the "Who's Cooking" Award for being the hottest Chapter in the State during their first year! Chapter members are a very dedicated group of volunteers that are helping to change public perceptions about blindness and this party is the perfect way to do this. You can ask about reading and writing Braille and learn how to write your name with a slate & stylus. You will be able to observe guide dogs in a real working environment and even watch them put through their paces in an impressive demonstration of their work. You will even hear a performance from a couple of blind musicians! You will most definitely have fun, while supporting a great cause!

            "Once you connect with someone on a more personal level, you feel more comfortable asking questions and you get good answers!" says Merry Schoch, the Chapter's vice President, a Junior at Florida Gulf Coast University majoring in Criminal Justice.

The NFB believes that the real problem of blindness is not the lack of eyesight, but public misconceptions about blindness. Public demonstrations like the one to be held at O'Brien's help people become more open to new ideas.

            "The Blue Hawaiians never hurt either," adds Charles hackney, a blind entrepreneur who serves as the Chapter treasurer.

            So, dress up in your best Hawaiian garb and head out to the party island at O'Brien's and celebrate with the National Federation of the Blind.  If you cannot attend the festivities and would like to support the chapter by purchasing a chance to win the $2200 prize package, send your name, address, telephone number, and email address, along with $10 for each entry desired to;
