Hey Mardi, I don't know if you've seen
www.deafdogs.org
but it's a site which talks about living with, and training a deaf  
dog.  You may want to make a vibrating collar for him; you can do this  
by taking the engine out of a remote control car (like a toy car) and  
attaching it to a collar.  This way you can clicker train a deaf dog  
where the vibration acts like the click-- as the secondary reinforcer.

One of Laveau's good dog friends is a deaf catahoula leopard dog who  
is deaf.  Her owner is deaf as well and when the four of us go out  
together, the joke is that Laveau has to be the ears for the rest of  
us LOL!
