I work as a medical transcriptionist and have been in the field 30 plus
years.

Stedman's has some word books and a medical dictionary that are accessible
but when buying from them be sure **NOT** to get books that are on their
"bookshelf" program as these are not accessible.

Some examples that work are Stedman's dictionary 7.0, Medical and Surgical
Equipment words and several others.

I use Jaws but the program we now use is not all that user-friendly to Jaws,
and in my humble opinion not all that friendly to sighted transcriptionists
either.

Jaws may need extensive scripting for some programs, I can't help there, I
am not a scripter, I can edit one if needed but I can't write them.

I also use several websites, Google is at the top of the list, but there are
a few others I use when needed, a dictionary site I use often is
www.onelook.com.

Subject: [nabop] Introduction

Hello, Everyone:

My name is Alicia and I am currently working towards my associates of
applied science in medical office administration with emphasis in medical
transcription. As a blind person I could not fulfill my goal of one day
becoming a nurse; therefore, I enrolled at the local college in the medical
office administration program. I have successfully completed four semesters
at the community college and am getting ready to enroll in my last year at
the college. I am enrolled full time for the fall semester and will enroll
again full time in the spring; however, I am required to complete a 120 hour
internship during this last semester. I am interested in hearing from other
blind medical transcriptionists regarding appropriate accommodations for the
workplace. What kinds of accommodations should I ask for? Are there word
books that are available to a blind medical transcriptionist I should ask
Rehab services to help provide? What kinds of challenges should I look
forward to during my internship? I am looking forward to hearing from you if
you are a blind medical transcriptionist, and use accommodations such as
JAWS, special software, or reference materials, computer adaptations, and
any other accommodation to aid you in succeeding in your line of work.

Thanks,

Alicia
