Hi, David. I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving with your family!
I just received the following from Sally Ann Gentry, a good friend of mine
from Tennessee, who is former Vice Chair of the Statewide Independent Living
Council there. She forwarded to me some information about a way for folks
who are blind or visually impaired to obtain computers at a low cost.
Because you are in the blindness field, I figured that you would find the
following to be of interest.
Take good care, and I hope that all is well.

Thanks, Sally, for telling me about this important resource. I did not know
about it but will send this on to others who may be able to benefit from
this. You're just great and, thanks to your simple act of getting this to
me (even at the risk of sending me something that I may have already known),
this information will now go out to blind individuals in every state! See
my friend? You *do* make a difference!

Hello, Ollie,
I received the following email regarding persons with a visual
impairment or totally blind receiving a low-cost computer from an agency in
Texas.
I wanted to make you aware of this, if not already known.
Hope your Thanksgiving was restful.
Warm Regards,
Sally Ann Gentry

Hello All:
I want to share this with all of you for your information, in case you or
someone you know may be able to benefit. I am passing on a link to a
website for the Texas Center for the Physically Impaired (TCPI). This
organization has had, for 15 years, a program where for a $100 donation they
will provide individuals who are blind or visually impaired, living in the
United States or Canada, with a computer. The computer is a refurbished
unit that includes keyboard, mouse, sound card, monitor and speakers. They
use Windows XP machines that they get donated from businesses. The computer
also includes a demo version of the Window-Eyes screen reader and a demo of
the ZoomText screen magnification software. If a recipient can use
ZoomText, they are able to get a licensed version for free from TCPI;
however, the same does not hold true for Window-Eyes. This is thanks to AI
Squared. Also, there is a seven-tape tutorial on how to use the computer
that is included. I spoke with Dr. Robert Langford, TCPI President
yesterday afternoon about this. It was first mentioned to me by a local
Lions club member in discussing where to get a computer for someone who had
gone to their club for help.
For more information, go to:
http://www.handicapability.org/computers.html. You can also call
214-340-6328 (Voice). The website doesn't list a TTY number. You may also
Dr. Langford, TCPI President about this program at boblang at airmail.net. I
do not know what sort of documentation of disability or anything like that
they require.
I hope this may help you or someone you know. I wish each of you a very
happy holiday season and all the best in 2008.
Thanks,
