New Nemeth Code Course
Winnetka, IL ? You could learn the tools to read and braille the
basic symbols of Nemeth Code right in the comfort of your own home.

Hadley's tuition-free course "Basic Nemeth Code" is now open to
blindness professionals and family members of blind individuals.
Available in print, this distance education course introduces you to
Nemeth Code at a pace that's right for you. The Nemeth Code for
Science and Mathematics is the braille code used for written math and science.

"Basic Nemeth Code" gives you the tools to read and braille the basic
symbols of the Nemeth Code. After briefly describing the development,
use and production of the Nemeth Code, this course introduces the
symbols and basic rules for brailling math computations.

The course first presents numerals and basic symbols which include
mathematical items like the decimal point, dollar sign and percent
sign, as well as the symbols for addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. As the course proceeds, you also learn
to braille math items such as fractions, superscripts, subscripts,
shapes, radicals and set notation. In addition, the course explains
how to braille complex mathematical problems both linearly and
spatially. Such computations include long division, fraction
reduction, and regrouping in subtraction.

The course also clarifies the rules for brailling letters as
mathematical symbols and explains when to use contractions and
short-form words in the Nemeth Code. In short, this course covers the
basic math symbols and concepts used through early high school math
and science.

Hadley instructor Pam Winters adds, "Learning the Nemeth Code will
enable you to help further develop the math skills of someone who is
visually impaired." This course is open to students in the Family
Education and Professional Education Programs. The prerequisite for
this course is successful completion of "Contracted Braille" or the
ability to read and write contracted braille. So why not contact
Student Services today to enroll? To do so, just call 800.526.9909 or
