>Congratulations to all the students, parents, teachers, and librarians who participated in or supported the 2006 Braille Readers Are Leaders Contest!
>
>It was a very successful year with 345 students participating from 32 states plus Canada. As you know, we restructured the contest two years ago so we could honor more students for outstanding performance. We select the Top Ten in each of five grade-specific categories, the top ten in a Print-to-Braille category, ten Most Improved winners from among all the contestants, and one or more winners for a new award called the Braille Leaders Community Service Award. All in all, we honored 75 top students with t-shirts and cash prizes. The list of these winners is attached.
>
>Contest participants represented all kinds of school placements: regular public schools, private schools, schools for the blind, and homeschoolers--we had them all! Thirteen schools for the Blind used the contest to supplement and/or to enhance their regular school Braille literacy curriculum. The California School for the Blind had the most entries at 32 students. Wyoming took center stage with the winning community service project performed by Hannah Weatherd in her home community of Saratoga, Wyoming.
>
>Finally, kudos' to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) affiliates and chapters that take this opportunity to give some extra special recognition to contest participants from their states. Thank you, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Virginia!
>
>All of you should have received your certificates and participant ribbons by now. If you have not, please let us know. Also, if someone is missing a club ribbon or if a name is misspelled on a certificate, we will be glad to send a replacement. You may contact me at the address below, or you may call or email Courtney Lawrence at clawrence at nfb.org or call her at our parent outreach office at (410) 659-9314 extension 2361.
>
>I would love to have pictures, copies of local school or newspaper articles, or anything else you would like to send me which highlights the accomplishments of contest participants. If any contest participants plan on attending the NFB Convention in July, please let me know, too. We have a wonderful Braille Readers Are Leader Reunion planned at the annual Braille Book Flea Market, and you wouldn't want to miss it.
>
>Finally, if you have suggestions on ways we can make this contest more effective and how we can reach more students, please pass them on.
>
>Here's wishing all of you a wonderful summer!
