I have done medical transcription for a living since the days of the
typewriter. I don't know too much about online schools, but the Andrews one
is supposed to be very good and they have dealt with blind students before.
There is also another one run by a blind transcriptionist, but I can't think
of that right now and will have to send that along later.
I work from home, but am currently an employee of a small transcription
company in the Orlando Florida area. In addition to the usual spell check
and other software of that type, I have a medical spell checker from
Stedman's that works right along with the regular spell checker. I also have
the Random House Unabridged dictionary as well as Stedman's medical
dictionary on my computer. I also have the Quick-Look electronic Drug
Reference, but I have an older version and they are having problems because
some software changes have been made on the 2006 version so it currently
does not work well with screen readers.
I would say that in addition to all this, a good background in medical
terminology is essential. You also need to have good typing skills and
computer skills and be pretty proficient with Word since that's what a lot
of transcription agencies use. Also, some use their own proprietary software
and it is necessary to work with it in order to get it to cooperate with
screen reading software.
Many places are hiring outside, so there are lots of work-at-home positions
available.
I hope this helped. Thanks and best of luck.

Hello. I am totally blind, and I would like to go into medical
transcription. I've looked into two online schools. They are kaysclass.com
and andrewsschool.com. I've also looked into the local community college,
although the college also teaches medical billing. I'm not interested in
medical billing. Is it better to go to a local school, or is it okay to do
the program online? If an online program is the way to go, what school is
the best? do the schools offer the textbooks in braille, text, or online?
Once i graduate from a program, would it be better to work at a hospital or
doctor's office, or could i work for a company from home right away. I am a
single mom with two school aged children, and i would like to be home when
they are, and still make a good living. I would appreciate any information
any members of the list can give me. thank you.
Sincerely,
Sarah Harris

Hi Sarah:
I'm in the same boat. I've contacted a couple of hospitals in my area to
see what they
recommend for education. I'm blind also so will need to work with some
software that works for medical transcription. Not having heard back from
the hospitals I don't have much more than that yet but I'll post something
when I hear something new.
By the way, your e-mail came with an attachment, or so my screen reader
said. I usually don't open e-mails with attachments as one of them blew up
my prior system so bad I had to buy a new computer or pay $400 to get the
old one fixed. I'm wondering if you created the attachment or if it is a
result of the e-list in general. Well that's all from:
