[MusicTlk] Writing for a Bb Trumpet

Jason (the 12 year old) comes from a family with no players in it, so I want to encourage him where he might not get it from his family.  His dad likes music, but he's not a player.  Therefore, Jason might not get much encouragement in his family.  Since I am a player and know how much fun playing is, I wanted to give Jason an opportunity to be the "star of the show" and play the melody line.  I'm sure his dad (and others) will praise him.  I'm  hoping that will be a positive experience that will get Jason to want to continue and stick with it.

I'm also trying, as someone else said, to keep this simple.

Yes, buying a book already written would be a lot less work on me, although writing for the trumpet would be an interesting challenge.  But anyway, does this book you mention have pieces written for trumpet?  Or are there different editions of the same book written for various instruments, so that you buy a book for piano and then a book for trumpet?  And if you have to buy a book specifically for trumpet, do you need to be careful to get a book for Bb trumpet?  I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of brass instruments, so I might guess there are different tunings for trumpets (e.g., Bb, Eb, and so on).  Therefore, you'd have to ask for the right book if that were the case.

Just weighing in as a trumpet player that I agree with the range suggestion.  Keeping it simple is good for now.  I started trumpet in 4th grade, and the Christmas Eve of my 5th grade year, my church asked me to play a couple of hymns and descants.  It was a good challenge, and you're absolutely right that it was a fantastic experience playing for others, especially since they hadn't come to church to hear me.  They were there to celebrate Christmas and my responsibility was to enhance, and hopefully not detract from their experience.

Hi Mike,

Rather than writing out the music for him, you could get a simple Christmas Carol book. We use one that I think is from Christian Book Distributors, called Classic Christmas Caroling Songbook. There are 30 songs in it, most in C, F and G. Of course, maybe you just want him to have the melody line! Just a suggestion, that's all.
