Hi Mike,
That's right. If the piano is playing in the key of C then the trumpet will read music in the key of D.
Depending on your nephews age and experience, the most comfortable range to play in and where the trumpet sounds best might be from around B flat right below middle C to an octave above that. That would be from middle C on the trumpet to an octave above. Just depends on how long he's been playing and all that.
