I was using an analogy to explain how the metaphor works.  I did not mean
that the context of the metaphor was arguments; I was simply giving a
parallel situation in which the expression might be used.  To relate it to
mannerisms (and to partially reiterate what I said earlier), it means that
the social classes treated each other badly (as opposed to the upper class
treating commoners badly or vice-versa).  Would it help if I sent you a
sheet explaining different figures of speech, rhetorical devices, etc...
not that you need one; it was just a thought, especially since it seems
that my illustration (not a literal illustration, but in this case,
illustration refers to an example used to explain how something functions,
in the case of this discussion, a figure of speech) was confusing.
