Unless she is your legally appointed guardian she has no power to do this.

Subject: [musictlk] Musical Career as a Bagpiper

Hi there everyone. I am 21, and I am currently studying vocal performance
and am a beginning bagpiper. I am in a non profit pipe band, but have been
invited to Modesto, CA by a professional pipe band. I am going to get four
hours of instruction daily, and then practice on my own for two. The pipe
major also found some part time jobs that I could check in to, and there is
a guide dog school close by. My question is, my mom is saying that I need to
attend college. I don't know if I want to do that right now. I just
completed a semester at Minnesota State, but I want to gain as much
independence, skills as a musician, and work experience as I can. I don't
believe that college is a main priority in my life right now. She jokingly
says, "If you don't go to school, I will have your dad come to California
and get you, then we'll lock you in your room and make you go to school." I
told her, "I'd have to be declared mentally incompetant." She said, "Well, I
would declare you mentally incompetant." It's like she doesn't understand
where I want my life to go. On this topic of parents, do they have the legal
power over me as a 21 year old totally blind person to come and take me out
of my host family's house, and force me to go back to NH and live at "home?"
Can they declare me mentally incompetant? It just really concerns me. So
much, that I am sometimes unfocussed during my rehearsals and practice. I
know this topic has come up before, and I know hopefully she isn't serious,
but I just need to know for my own sake to feel at ease. Thanks everyone.
