Please call Rep. Denny Rehberg and ask him to co-sponsor the quiet car
legislation -- we want them to make enough noise so that we can hear them.
This affects all of us, of all ages. His office should contact the
Republican who is one of the original co-sponsors.
Bill: H.R. 5734
Republican Co-Sponsor: Cliff Stearns of Florida

Subject: [NFBAffiliatePresidents] Quiet Car Legislation
As some of you know, the committee on automobile and Pedestrian safety met
by phone over the weekend. I agreed to contact this list and urge my fellow
presidents to do whatever you can to encourage your members to urge their
members of Congress to become cosponsors of H.R. 5734, the Pedestrian Safety
Enhancement Act of 2008. As you probably know, this bill instructs the
secretary of transportation to see that research is done to find out what
kind of sound could be added to hybrid cars in electric mode and to other
silent cars so that they can at least be heard when they are approaching
pedestrians, who may otherwise be unaware of their presence. The bill has
been introduced and is now gathering dust, which it will continue to do
unless enough members sign on to make the committee sit up and take notice.
Democrats should contact Ed Towns of NY, and Republicans should contact
Cliff Stearns of Florida. Stearns is particularly concerned for seniors, who
are a group much at risk from these vehicles.
We should all urge our members to call their House members to ask them to
become cosponsors of the bill. About ten folks have already done so--none, I
am ashamed to say, from Ohio. I intend to change that. Please do the same in
your state.
Barbara
