A sea turtle. In 2008, The National Center for Blind Youth in Science
(NCBYS), a program of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan
Institute, will be offering a Junior Science Academy targeting children in
grades three through six. The NCBYS developed its Science Academy in 2004 in
order to spark and enhance blind students’ interest in scientific study, an
academic area that many falsely believe is too difficult for the blind.
This year, with hands-on experiences, tactile materials, and innovative
nonvisual teaching methods, the Academy will open its doors to the youngest
group of scientific explorers in NCBYS history.
The four-day program will expose blind children and their parents to the
excitement of science in real-life applications. Through hands-on
instruction, field trips, and interactive activities, the students will
learn that science can be fun. Parents will attend corresponding workshops
focusing on meeting the needs of their blind children.
The cost of travel, room, board, and program materials will be covered by
the NFB Jernigan Institute for each student Science Academy students stand

“From the unanswered questions about our world to the puzzles of the
universe and beyond, we imagine a future where the blind are encouraged and
empowered to apply their diverse capabilities to the exploration of new
horizons along with their sighted peers. That is why we, the blind, have
committed our Jernigan Institute to improving educational opportunities for
blind youth in a way that no one else has ever imagined.”
