Joy,
Thank you, thank you for putting so much of yourself in this and advocating
for others and educating us along he way. Being so vulnerable is not easy
but it helps the rest of us step back and think about the issues. I belong
to MAB because I think as a group we can do so much more than individually;
as an educator I need to try and keep up on the issues and try to help with
the solutions. I often do not have the time or energy to read the postings
from this group but I am glad I woke up this morning and opened your posting
Joy, it is something I will save and ponder for a long time. I am not blind
and don't have low vision but it has been my life's work to advocate for
blind children and adults and be part of the solution to them getting a
solid education, preparing for and finding work. Helping parents who are
children's first and most inflential teachers has always been a big part of
the solution for me.
I hope someone takes Joy up on the challenge to research, to quote Joy:
"It wouldn't hurt some of us who have time or are interested to look at the
web sites of the two major consumer organizations of the blind, to research
their histories and study their philosophies and how they are the same and
how they are different."
As in most areas of life there are no perfect solutions but making informed
decisions seems the best we can do. Then we can at least have peace and
understanding in our decisions. We can then fight the fight with more
confidence even though it may mean we have to change directions sometimes.
I wish I could say discrimination is gone, most often it is because a lack
of information but not always. I confront it probably weekly but maybe it
instills the drive that keeps me fighting?
Joy, thanks again for giving of your time and self. I'm sure I missed some
other good postings, sorry but thank you anyway. Keep up the good work you
all!
