Thanks to the extraordinary leadership of Dan Burke and the support of
our other blind mentors, the children at Camp Eureka quickly accepted
their blindness as normal and enthusiastically engaged in activities to
learn blind skills. Each morning Dan led the campers in cane skills.
Below is a message from a parent that demonstrates one example of what
great role models for these kids can do. This particular camper had
never used a cane before and was so excited on the last day of camp to
learn that she could keep her NFB white cane.

"Jacey used her cane to navigate the airports on our way home. She
proudly showed her dad and family the proper way to hold and use it.
Having never used one before, I wondered if it was just a novelty, so I
asked where it really helped her and she said it did in unfamiliar
territory where she didn't know if the floor rose or a step down she
didn't anticipate.

She loved all the mentors and keeps laughing about someone
mispronouncing "Butte"!

Thanks so much for everything!"

Julie (parent)

Excellent mentors are key to a successful camp. A huge thank you to Dan
and Cindy, and our young adult mentors Faith, Aaron and Trevor!
