MDT Introduces Roundabout Website
As roundabouts gain popularity in Montana, the Montana Department of
Transportation has developed a Web site providing information to help
the public understand how to maneuver through these circular flowing
intersections.
The Web site is located at http://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/roundabouts/.
The site provides basic information regarding roundabouts, including why
MDT wants to utilize roundabouts, how pedestrians, bicyclists and
motorist can all safely maneuver through them, background information
and frequently asked questions.
Currently MDT has several roundabouts on the drawing board throughout
Montana, including a single-lane roundabout to be constructed at the new
South Helena Interchange this summer. Other proposed roundabouts are;
one single-lane roundabout in Montana City at the intersection of
Jackson Creek Road and Highway 282, and a single-lane with bypass lanes
in Billings at the intersection of North 27th Street and Airport Road.
The 2005 Montana Legislature passed a resolution encouraging MDT to
construct more roundabouts instead of signalized, right-angle
intersections. Because roundabouts decrease speeds and provide for less
conflict points, crash frequency and severity is often reduced at such
intersections. Additionally, delays are reduced due to a smooth flow in
traffic with rather than stops and starts at signalized intersections.
Emissions associated with vehicles idling at stop signals are also
reduced.
MDT's mission is to serve the public by providing a transportation
system and services that emphasize quality, safety, cost effectiveness,
economic vitality and sensitivity to the environment.
